Pleased to report a drop in temperature the last couple of days. From the mid 30s to more manageable high twenties. A little bit of cloud too.
Lake Balaton is the largest expanse of fresh water in Central Europe!! It covers almost 600 square kilometres and is nigh on 80 kilometers in length! I arrived in a town called Siofak on the south eastern shore of Lake Balaton early evening on Sunday and in looking for somewhere to stay was approached by a local man asking if I was searching for accommodation. I answered in the affirmative. He took me to his home for a look see and tonight will be the last of the three nights I have spent there! Sofiak itself can only really be described as a budget holiday resort and a couple of hours looking at what was on offer yesterday was enough for me. Today however I drove round to the north east side and visited lakeside holiday towns called Balatonfreud and Tihany. Having described Siofak as a resort for those on a budget, Balatonfreud is certainly a couple of notches up and Tihany probably another couple up from there. Will drive the southern edge of the lake heading west tomorrow to visit Keszthely, also on the lakeside, and then Heviz, probably the most famous of Hungary's spa towns. I'll then drop into south central Hungary and overnight in Pecs, which is said to be 'one of the most pleasant and interesting cities to visit in the whole of Hungary'. I look forward to it. Thereafter into eastern Croatia!!
Pics of the lake attached.
Take care,
