And Home Again!!

And so another one ends!  Left Gdansk just before 10 am on Saturday morning and didn't stop, apart from taking the Calais to Dover ferry, until I reached West Yorkshire just on 10 am on Sunday. Somewhere between 1200 and 1300 miles I would think!! Till the next time!!
Yours ever,

Poland, Gdansk

The sole purpose of travelling up to Gdansk was to see the place where the fall of communism in Eastern Europe started. Where the first domino was tipped!! And I'm pleased to say I've seen the shipyard/s, and I've walked across the very same bridge that the leaders of the shipyard workers crossed, to sit down in what to all intents and purposes is a very architecturally insignificant building, to negotiate with government officials for the right to form self governing independent trade unions. And the rest is history!! You may have noticed that I've also been collecting 'old towns' on my way round and I have to say Gdansk's was well worth the visit!! Some pictures of those shipyards to start with!!

Poland, Warsaw

Warsaw in temperatures in the high 30s is very hard work, as you have to walk a long way in between places of interest. But considering it was all but raised to the ground 60 years ago it's not in bad shape really. The old town is not the best example I've seen but certainly worth a look, with Castle Square and the Royal Castle itself taking pride of place. The so called Royal Way is also very attractive and the Palace of Culture and Science building is magnificent. The Saxon Gardens with the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was also a highlight for me, together with the Warsaw Uprising Museum. Otherwise, parks, churches and other museums, including a National Museum, abound. Warsaw is the last capital city I will visit this trip and despite moaning about how exhausting it's been I have thoroughly enjoyed it. There are however a number of countries in Central and Eastern Europe that I have visited during the last three months that I would place before it. A general ensemble of pictures attached, talking of which Warsaw is also home to the Chopin Museum of course!! Off to Gdansk tomorrow!!

Poland, Wroclaw

Described as a 'gracious mix of Gothic and Baroque styles', expectations were running high. Less than three hours later I was somewhat disappointed! The old town square is quite remarkable however. Didn't even spot a gnome, but I do have to confess to being less than enthusiastic about seeking them out!!
