The Sighetu Prison Museum was initiated in 1992 as a memorial to the victims of communism and local Sighetu resistance movement. It is housed in the former Sighetu political prison and is now recognized as one of the main memorial sites of the continent together with Auschwitz Museum and the Peace Memorial in Normandy. I have to say it is an absolutely amazing place. The brutality of the communist regime can only be described as staggering but eqyally the courage and bravery of individuals and groups who gave their lives to oppose it. Not a dry eye in the house!!
