Left Greece for Turkey yesterday and having crossed the border, again headed for the Aegean coast. I have to say the border crossing was well organised and painless compared to some of my other experiences! However, my initial experience of driving in Turkey can only be described as extraordinary! Drove into a town soon after crossing the border to find an atm. Not a road marking in sight and junctions and roundabouts, such as they are, are a free for all. And then of course there are horses and carts, all manner of modes of family transport, some of which begar belief, mopeds and motorbikes, and bicycles the majority of all of which pay no regard to any form of road convention whatsoever!!! Then of course there are pedestrians who are of the view they can walk anywhere, at anytime!! It really is incredible!! But somehow it seems to work!! Anyway, initially stopped off at a medium seaside resort called Sarkozy, with the intention of staying over. Didn't stay long. Grubby, bordering on dirty. People, however, very pleased to see us and very friendly, despite an inability to communicate on both our parts. In most countries I have visited a large number of young people have been able to speak some English. This is not the case in Turkey as yet. So... moved closer to Istanbul to a city called Corlu. Again somewhat grubby and contrasts in wealth and lifestyle are extreme, and I mean extreme! We were accosted yesterday by a very vociferous and excited group of young boys asking for money! Nonetheless food good and coffee (and cake) delicious!! Heading into Istanbul later today!
Some general pictures from the last couple of days attached, initially leaving Greece.
